I have always had a strange pull towards the sea and swear I was a mermaid in a former life. I don’t know where it comes from. To my knowledge no one in the family was a sailor, fisherman or even lived by the sea.
Which brings me onto my geographical location. I live in Wolverhampton, which although is not officially the furthest point from the sea in the UK , it might as well be. Yes, we have good transport links but a day at the coast is at least a 2 hour drive away and with the price of petrol these days, it’s
something that takes a bit of planning.
I spent a lot of time in Cornwall as a child and into my teens. I attribute those carefree times and happy memories as having a lot to do with the passion that I now have for the coast. I can even say that I lived in Cornwall for 5 weeks when I was 12 but circumstances prevailed and I found myself back in the landlocked West Midlands.
I’m not knocking where I live, well….that depends which day you catch me on, but for someone who
fell in love with the idea of becoming a surfer, it’s not exactly the best location for regular surf
sessions. And for someone who loved being by the sea and staring at it for hours on end, but hated
the idea of getting in it, the odds were stacked up against me…..
