Aside from the surfing, Ste and I had other reasons for getting fit.
Ste, and Im sure he won’t mind me saying this, likes his beer and junk food, and this has led to a steady weight gain over the past few years. Looking at some Facebook photos that he had been tagged in whilst we were in Croyde last week, he was ashamed of what he saw. Last year, after the mad day trip, he had a very successful surf fit campaign. He lost about 2 stone, went swimming regularly and exercised at home. Then we moved house and disrupted the routine and the rest is history.
I had put weight on over the winter, lost my Nan last year and there were some health problems in the family. I had quite a negative outlook and problems in the past with anxiety which had re-surfaced since Christmas.
The surfing was the impetus we needed to get fit and so last night we joined our local gym. I haven’t had much success with gyms in the past so it was a big thing for me to psych myself up for it. I was pleasantly surprised though – it’s a lovely gym, local to us, small and very friendly. No intimidation, no muscly men showing off – just a bunch of people who want to get fit for different reasons.
So, the plan is to go 3 times a week. Build upper body strength, improve CV fitness and stamina. Will we stick to it?
